Greater Vancouver Placenta Encapsulation

The placenta has amazing abilities during the postpartum period; it can heal, sustain, and strengthen you. For thousands of years, placenta has been used to avoid postpartum symptoms: depression, low vitality, fatigue, insufficient lactation, low birth weight and hormonal imbalance.

An estimated 1 out of every 6 women experiences troubling depression or anxiety after the birth of their child. About 80% of mothers feel the “baby blues” or postpartum  blues  3‐5 days after giving birth. (postpartum.org)

Having experienced postpartum depression myself I have become passionate about helping new parents experience a smoother postpartum.

I have been encapsulating for over 5 years and have encapsulated over 300 placentas.

What is Placenta Encapsulation?

Placenta Encapsulation is a method of preparing the baby’s placenta for ingestion in capsule form. It involves steaming, dehydrating and grinding the placenta which is then sifted into capsules for consumption. Throughout the entire process the placenta is handled consciously to respect the placenta and prevent contamination.

Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation

The placenta is considered to be rich in natural iron and hormones which are useful in healing after birth. The benefits of encapsulating your placenta may include:

  • lower rates of postpartum depression
  • lower rates of 'baby blues'
  • increased milk production
  • hormonal re-balance
  • increased sense of well-being
  • increased energy
  • decreased anemia
  • decreased lochia (bleeding)
  • decreased fatigue
  • faster recovery from birth
  • rich source of nutrition
  • quicker involution of uterus

Beneficial Components of the Placenta

The placenta is full of your own bio-specific hormones, nutrients and healing properties. The known ingredients that give the placenta its healing properties are:

  • Gonadotrophin: the precursor to estrogen, progesterone and testosterone
  • Prolactin: promotes lactation
  • Oxytocin: provides pain relief and stimulates bonding between parent and infant, produced during breastfeeding to facilitate bonding of parent and infant.
  • Thyroid stimulating hormone: boosts energy and helps recovery from stressful events
  • Cortisone: combats stress and unlocks energy stores
  • Interferon: stimulates the immune system to protect against infections
  • Prostaglandin: an anti-inflammatory
  • Hemoglobin: replenishes iron deficiency and anemia (a common postpartum condition)
  • Urokinase inhibiting factor and factor XIII: stops bleeding and enhances wound healing
  • Gammaglobulin: immune booster that helps protect against postpartum infections
